Friends and Family Join Couple for an Intimate Destination Wedding in the Woods
Dave and Maria’s vision for their intimate destination wedding included having fun with their loved ones and truly being able to take in each moment. They were excited about sunset portraits and really love documentary style photography. The wedding was natural and relaxed, which is exactly what the couple intended!
The story of Dave and Maria’s intimate destination wedding begins with a proposal gone awry. Maria’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. She believes that what happens that day dictates what happens for the rest of the year. Knowing this, Dave intended to start their year off right with an elaborate proposal. Unfortunately, the ring was lost in the mail and they were stuck inside due to an ice storm!
Amazingly, Dave hid his panic from Maria that night while trying to locate the ring. Once the ring showed up at Maria’s parent’s house, her best friend overnighted it to Dave. While at Looking Glass Falls, Dave proposed to Maria with the ring attached to her dog’s collar. Maria says that even though nothing went as planned, it turned out perfectly and they began planning their special day.
The Big Day
The couple and most of their friends are from North Carolina but they traveled to Moneta, Virginia for a woodsy wedding which took place on the bride’s family property. They rented cabins at Smith Mountain Lake State Park and stayed there for the weekend. The girls got ready at a nearby home on the lake while the guys used one of the cabins.
One of the sweetest details of this wedding was the bride’s youngest brother performing the ceremony which took place in a wooded area of the property under an arbor built by Maria’s family. Maria fought back tears while walking down the aisle toward her handsome groom and their dogs roamed around while they exchanged vows. The wildflower bouquets and floral bridesmaids dresses looked beautiful against the natural backdrop and Maria looked stunning in her gown with lace details.
Guests gathered for the reception under a white tent in a field on the property. Outside, people could gather around a firepit. The night was full of delicious food, good company, loads of laughter and plenty of dancing. This couple and their friends and family really know how to party!
