Laid-back, Casual Backyard Virginia Wedding

The Proposal

Skyler and Amy met while working at Chipotle in Lynchburg, Va. The two bonded over dicing onions, squashing avocados and cooking massive amounts of chicken. When it came time to pop the question, Skyler planned the perfect day. Here is what Amy had to say, “We went and painted pottery, out to a nice dinner, dessert, and sat and talked (and froze) at my favorite spot on LU’s campus. I was SURE this was the moment I had been waiting for. Nope! Nothing. Two days later he told me our pottery was finished early and needed to be picked up. I told him I had dinner plans with a friend and would be late if I went, but he begged me to go so I agreed. Frustrated that he was making me late to my dinner date, I went to pick up the pottery. Skyler was standing there holding a sign he had painted hours before our previous date that said “Will you marry me?” And the rest is history. (My dinner date was out of town and in on the whole thing).”

The Details

Amy’s goal was to have a calm, casual, family oriented wedding, with few distractions in the backyard of the home where she lives. She chose light grey for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be a neutral contrast with all of the green in the backyard and the light pink hydrangeas. The setting was light and airy, with wispy tulle and flowers everywhere. Skyler and Amy both appreciate the simple things. The couple did most of the decorating themselves, with some help from friends and family. A friend’s father made the simple arbor at the ceremony space.. For the reception, the couple used potted flowers as centerpieces, and gold chargers to accent the gold pots. Amy says, “My goal was to add some color and excitement without being a distraction from the people sitting across the table.”

The florals played an important part in the planning of Amy and Skyler’s family backyard Virginia wedding because Amy loves them so. She ordered bulk hydrangeas and greens online and her aunt and cousin arranged them. She even replanted and gave away the potted plants that were at the reception tables.

The Attire

Amy and her bridesmaids ordered their dresses from Azazie.com. Amy says, “I have always dreamed of a wispy romantic dress with lace and I found my dream dress! It had a V-neckline with lacy straps, and an open back. The skirt was flowy with a loose tulle and a little bit of a train. The veil I got as a backup for the trial and fell in love with it!” She told the bridesmaids to pick their own styles of dress as long as they were the same color. Skyler and his groomsmen ordered their suits through Menguin, which is an online rental company that sends the whole look – from the dress shirt and tie to even the socks. They wore dark blue suits that looked lighter in the sunshine. White shirts and navy ties. Skyler’s tie was light grey, which matched the bridesmaids and set him apart from the groomsmen. The bride loved the cohesion it created for the guys to have matching suits.

The Ceremony

According to Amy, her favorite parts of her casual backyard Virginia wedding were the quiet moments in the ceremony. “From Skyler and I bawling as I walked down the aisle to our parents praying over our marriage, I cherished each moment. The reception was busy and a lot of fun, but it is the slowed down moments I’ll remember forever.” Her most anticipated moment was seeing each other at the altar. “We didn’t have a first look (because Skyler wanted to be surprised), so I think our most exciting and anticipated moment was the first look as I walked down the aisle! It so so special but also the moment where it became real!”

The Bride’s Advice

Remember that there are so many things not worth stressing out about! At the end of the day you’ll be leaving married to your best friend, and that is the best thing! Also if things aren’t perfect, you’re probably the only one who notices. Don’t stress, just enjoy the day,” Amy advised.
