Soooo, after finding myself constantly mentioning some of the same location ideas to clients over the past few years, I’ve decided maybe I should put these locations in one central spot – a blog post – that I can pull out and supply to clients anytime they need a suggestion for the perfect spot for pictures. So here we go … a list of just a few of my most favorite places to photograph couples and families around the Lynchburg area.
Riverside Park is located just off Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg. This park is the perfect location for portraits because it offers beautiful flowering and green trees, open grassy areas, wooded trails and overlooks to the James River. There is a shaded courtyard area that boasts some unique rock walls and benches to sit. The park also backups to the Miller-Clayton House which is meticulously kept up by the local garden club. There is a bathroom on site to make changing into a second outfit simple.
Blackwater Creek Trail
The Blackwater Creek Trail spans a large amount of Lynchburg, however, I’ve found the downtown area near the Amazement Square to be a great spot for portrait sessions. It is right in the heart of downtown near the train tracks, so you get that urban feel. Once you start traveling along the trail, you’re lured into more woodsy, green space. And this particular part of the trail also takes you over a steel bridge and past abandoned buildings. There is a lot of opportunity for a variance of backdrops along this stretch of the trail.
If you’re looking for a more urban feel for your session images, then downtown Lynchburg is the place for you. There’s so many unique spots to capture that allow for the old architecture to make an appearance in your pictures. From alleyways, to treelined sidewalks, the Monument Terrace, and a variety of colored doorways, downtown Lynchburg does not disappoint.
Old City Cemetery
So you may be thinking …. a cemetery?? You want me to get pictures taken in a cemetery? 🙂 Well The Old City Cemetery is just not any old cemetery with gravestones. The City Cemetery boasts cobblestone streets, a pond and butterfly garden, and huge tree with a swing, and some nice open grassy space. There is also a chapel on site. And we can get pictures with all of these and NOT have one gravestone in the image 🙂
Sierra Vista just outside of Lynchburg in Forest, Va. has magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as wooded areas and grassy fields. There is also a barn on site. There is a $100 fee to use Sierra Vista for a half hour, and an appointment needs to be made. But if you’re looking for mountain views and don’t mind the fee, this is a great portrait location.
Sweet Briar College
Sweet Briar College is actually located about 20 minutes down the road from Lynchburg in Amherst. But the little drive is worth it. The college offers a variety of scenic backdrops including an old green hay barn, boathouse on a lake, old brick buildings, open fields and woods too. The options at Sweet Briar College are endless!
